Moving Checklist

There are so many things to keep in mind as you move, especially if it’s to a new community. Use this printable relocation toolkit checklist for lots of helpful tips as you prepare for your move.

As soon as you learn about your move

  • Contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or your tax professional about federal income tax-deductible moving expenses.
  • Create a moving expense log/receipt folder.
  • Contact your insurance professional to see how and if you should cover your household items during the move. Make sure your vehicle and home policies are up to date, and notify them of your new address. Research auto insurance rates for your new community.
  • Schedule medical, dental, and eye appointments for the entire family and get copies of medical prescriptions, glasses prescriptions, and medical records for yourself.
  • Research and determine if you will utilize a moving company to transport your household items.
  • Organize personal records, such as birth certificates, insurance papers, warranties, tax information, etc. and make sure they are in a safe spot during the moving process.
  • Contact your employer if you have a 401(k) and talk with a wealth management professional to see if you should consider rolling money into an IRA or other savings vehicle.
  • Unemployed spouses who will look for work after the move should start updating résumés and request a reference or letter of recommendation from their current employer.
  • Videotape and photograph your household items so you can make an inventory of things to be moved.
  • If selling your house, make necessary repairs and updates to your home.
  • Identify schools, neighborhoods, and recreational activities in your new location. If moving to the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor, visit for events and activities in our community.

Eight weeks prior to moving

  • Take inventory of your home and remove the clutter (moving is a great time to sort and donate unused items).
  • Transfer children’s school records.
  • Contact your life insurance company and notify them of your new address, and make sure your policy information and beneficiaries are up-to-date.
  • Start researching childcare options, if necessary. If your children are school aged, check the enrollment requirements for their new school district. Create a folder for each student with their birth certificate, Social Security Number, immunization records, previous school records, etc.
  • Research getting a new driver’s license and registration.

Six weeks prior to moving

  • Complete a change of address card at the post office or online at
  • Price and find storage (if needed).
  • Make a list of friends, relatives, and businesses to notify of your move. These should include, but are not limited to: banks, brokerage and investment firms, employer’s HR department, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, credit card companies, insurance companies, utility companies, professional firms like your accountant and lawyer, medical facilities, schools, pharmacy, veterinarian, membership clubs, places of worship, etc.
  • Start using food and supplies that will not go with you.
  • Order moving supplies like boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and permanent markers. Start packing items you don’t often use.
  • Have drapes, comforters, bedspreads, etc. professionally cleaned before they are packed.
  • Check room dimensions in your new home and make sure large pieces of furniture will fit through the doorways.
  • Plan for short-term or long-term storage as needed in your new community.

Four weeks prior to moving

  • Contact all utility services at your old address and connect them to the new one. Schedule disconnection with the following companies: utility, cable, water, gas/electric company, phone, internet service provider, home security system, trash collection, lawn, cleaning, etc.
  • Collect all important documents that will be needed for the move.
  • Separate valuables like jewelry, photographs, videos, and vital documents to a safe box that you will personally transport to your new home. If you utilized a mover, have the estimate in this box because you will need it on moving day.
  • Send your change of address to family, friends and the list of companies you created to notify of your move.
  • Have your medical records forwarded to your new health care providers.
  • Consider appraisals for highly valuable items.
  • Schedule vehicle maintenance and repairs.

Three weeks prior to moving

  • Dispose of items that cannot be moved properly.
  • Schedule connection dates for new utilities and pay deposits, if necessary.
  • Arrange for child care, and pet boarding on moving day, if necessary.
  • Consider giving away houseplants if you don’t move them yourself.
  • Return library books and any other items that are out on loan.
  • Check with your dry cleaners to make sure you have nothing left to pick up.

Two weeks prior to moving

  • Cancel or transfer newspaper delivery.
  • Transfer prescriptions and have plenty on hand to get you through the move.
  • Create a folder of information for the new occupant of your home that could include warranties, contact lists, appliance manuals, etc.
  • Pay outstanding bills.
  • Create an emergency phone list for the new community.
  • Retrieve items from your safe deposit box* and cancel.
    *Safe deposit box contents are not FDIC insured.
  • Plan meals so you won’t have to use any appliances that will be packed. Try to empty the refrigerator during your last few weeks at your current residence.
  • Back up your computer files.
  • Remove wall accessories such as drapery rods, food and utensil racks, etc.
  • Drain water from all garden hoses.
  • Disassemble outdoor play equipment, if necessary.

One day prior to moving

  • Empty and defrost your refrigerator and freezer.
  • Set aside your toolkit and items that will be used on moving day, such as cleaning materials and vacuum cleaner, so they will not become lost.
  • Mark items that are needed first as “load last.”
  • Disconnect electronics like TVs, VCRs, DVDs, stereos, computers, etc.
  • Remove portable air conditioners, clock pendulums, light bulbs, and satellite dishes.
  • Set aside the electric garage door opener, spare keys, etc. for the next resident.
  • Take note of utility meter readings.
  • Check every cabinet, closet, and room one last time to make sure everything is packed.

Moving-in checklist

  • Check appliances, garage door openers, door and window locks, etc. to make sure everything is working properly.
  • Have tools ready for assembling furniture.
  • Check on the service of utilities, phone, gas, electric, water, phone, etc. to make sure they are working.
  • Check the pilot light on the stove, hot water heater, and furnace.
  • Ask your mail carrier for any mail that might be held.
