A Grove of Trees Planted for Paperless Payroll 2019

A partnership between Hills Bank and SOLE® Financial helped Goodwill of the Heartland recently achieve 100% paperless payroll. That corporate social responsibility (CSR) has brought a grove of trees to life in the name of Goodwill of the Heartland through SOLE® Financial’s Paperless Tree Project.

Together, the payroll team at Goodwill and the Treasury Management group at Hills Bank eliminated the issuance of paper checks for over 200 unbanked employees through the implementation of SOLE® Visa® Payroll Cards. The payroll card allows businesses to efficiently pay their team members by electronically adding funds to a payroll card issued to each employee. The time, expense and resources saved by going paperless can lead to significant savings for companies.

Patty Hansche, First Vice President of Treasury Management at Hills Bank, brought the service to the attention of the payroll team at Goodwill. By connecting the payroll team at Goodwill with the implementation team at SOLE® Financial, the goal of achieving 100% paperless payroll was reached within a few months. Once the goal was met, the added bonus was the Paperless Trees Project. It was a natural fit for Goodwill.

In addition to its primary mission of helping people with barriers to independence, Goodwill also cares about the environment. When people donate to Goodwill and shop at Goodwill stores, they are giving new life to old things and diverting usable goods from area landfills. Goodwill also recycles over 10 million pounds of goods each year. The organization is committed to supporting sustainability throughout its retail operations and beyond, and paperless payroll is yet one more strategy it’s now employing to be greener.

In addition to the planting of a grove of trees, Hansche shared four ways SOLE® Payroll Cards can help Corridor businesses be greener:

  1. Payroll debit cards eliminate paper waste. A business loads funds electronically onto a SOLE® Visa® Payroll Card, through the same process they do traditional direct deposit. Electronic payroll eliminates the paper used in paychecks and envelopes. In addition, employees can monitor their financial activity online, eliminating the need for paper bank statements.
  2. Payroll Cards eliminate emissions from mail delivery and processing. No need to drive to the post office or put paychecks in a mail delivery truck, payroll is processed electronically. Also, employees will not have to drive to a bank to cash their paper checks.
  3. Payroll Cards travel with employees, even after they leave a job. Employees can take their Payroll Card with them to their second, next, or any job for easy electronic payroll processing. Payroll Cards can also be debited for rent, bills, etc. enabling employees to better manage their funds.
  4. Employees can electronically check their balances on the SOLE® Paycard App or through There’s no need for them to get a paper statement or drive to their bank to check their balance. Proper use of the SOLE® Paycard App can eliminate traditional check cashing fees for employees.
